  • practice: participate in various activities to test stereotypes
  • create: write and share a “Just Because…” poem
  • reflect: fill out Google Form regarding the module

activities

INTRODUCE
  • Watch short videos of Wendy, Ayman, Roy, and Amanda from Hyphen Nation
  • Watch Vice’s short video “Racial Stereotypes”
  • Discuss: Have you ever heard or witnessed something similar to these situations? How did you feel when you heard/witnessed it?
  • Review syllabus and module expectations

EXPOSE
  • Read and annotate “The Blink of an Eye.” Discuss the article as a class.
  • Write a response based on this prompt: Can you think of a time when you have been implicitly bias? Does this happen often?

PRACTICE
  • Participate in “Labels” activity
    • ​We will have generic labels on our foreheads or backs like: tall, athletic, smart, forgetful, etc. We will interact with others based on those labels. (Think of non-offensive version of Michael Scott’s diversity activity haha)
    • After the activity we will discuss and reflect about our experience.
      • ​Was the label what you guessed, or were you surprised by it?
      • When people stereotyped you, were you able to disregard it?
      • Did you try to disprove the stereotype? If so, did it work?
      • How did you feel toward the person who was stereotyping you?
      • If your attribute was positive (e.g., "good at math"), how did you feel?
      • When stereotyping others, how easy was it to find confirming evidence?
      • When stereotyping others, how did you react to disconfirming evidence?
    • Watch “PB&J Racism” and “The Life Changing Magic of Hanging Out” and take notes on the videos
      • Discuss: How can we rid ourselves of implicit biases?
      • Read “Just Because…” poem to get an idea of DOK expectations
      • Use figurative language section in the Reading and Writing Handbook and worksheet to practice and review figurative language

CREATE
  • For your DOK, you will write a “Just Because…” Poem 
    • Think of a situation where you have been stereotyped. For example: You are blonde, so someone assumed you weren’t smart, or you are tall, so someone assume you are great at basketball. Create a poem based on your experience
    • You can use the template provided as a guide to help you get started (I would like some originality),  or you can create your own style.
  • Revise as needed

REFLECT
  • Fill out this Google Form
