  • What is informational/explanatory writing?
  • What is the connection between a concrete example and analysis in writing?

goals

  • Students will understand that informational or explanatory writing is direct, clear writing that expresses an idea based on facts; it shares information rather than persuades an audience
  • Students will understand that concrete examples are facts that answer questions like who, what, where, when, why, and how - and that analysis makes connections between these examples to a deeper concept or message

  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
  • Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research
Language
  • Demonstrate command of conventions of standard English grammar when speaking and writing

 Monday: 
  • warm-up: SAT practice questions (sentence completion)
    • answer first six questions together, reviewing test-taking strategies
    • answer the next six independently, then review
  • overview of the week
  • introduction to Stardust movie
  • begin watching movie and take notes on key characters
    • personality: what adjectives describe them?
    • what we know: what does the character do and why?
  • debrief beginning of movie and compare notes
Tuesday: 
  • Finish watching Stardust
    • complete notes
    • compare notes and impressions of characters
  • Choose one character to work with 
    • brainstorm: what kinds of jobs would this character likely apply for? why?
  • Explore job websites
    • perform Google search based on types of jobs and/or location
    • sites to try: www.monster.com, www.snagajob.com, www.careerbuilder.com
    • choose one job to focus on - print job description/application requirements

  • PowerPoint mini lesson
    • clear focus for each slide
    • balance text and images
    • simple formatting
  • Build PowerPoint to present your character's job application (3 slides) -
    • introduce character - personality and what we know from movie
    • describe job and requirements 
    • give summary of character's experience and skills
      • why are they suited for this job?
Friday​: 
  • Finish PowerPoint and present
  • Wrap up notes and revisions
