How do we intentionally persuade an audience?

In this module, we will turn to famous speeches to analyze and understand how to use Aristotle's appeals (logos, pathos, ethos) and rhetorical devices effectively... and then use them ourselves!

Module summary:
  • discuss rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos)
  • apply wisdom of rhetorical appeals to a famous speech
  • plan, deliver, and evaluate two original speeches

  • Students will understand that effective speeches use language intentionally through appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos to connect with their audience and to draw focus to important concepts.
  • Students will understand that effective speakers back up their ideas, organize intentionally, and know their material solidly.

Tuesday 
  • warm-up: article on logos, pathos, and ethos
    • annotate as you see fit to remember the key points
  • watch sermon from the movie Cold Comfort Farm
  • discuss rhetorical devices and Aristotle's appeals (logos, pathos, ethos)
    • what appeals and rhetorical devices are used in Amos' sermon to the "Quiverin' Brethren"?
  • choose a famous speech from this History Place list and print it out
    • annotate and answer analysis questions on handout
  • discuss famous speeches as a group
Wednesday
  • speech #1
    • choose a topic that interests you and decide what you want to say about it: what will be your central message?
    • plan out a 2 minute speech
    • research as needed to defend your points
    • write speech, then practice yourself giving the speech and time yourself
  • deliver your speech to the group
  • evaluate speeches
Thursday
  • speech #2
    • choose another topic that interests you and decide what you want to say about it: what will be your central message?
    • plan out a 2 minute speech
    • research as needed to defend your points
    • write speech, then practice yourself giving the speech and time yourself
  • conference with Christine while you're prepping (feedback from first speech)
  • deliver your speech to the group
    • self-evaluate
Friday
  • write two paragraph reflection
    • what makes for an effective speech?
    • what was your experience giving speeches - strengths? weaknesses? growth?
  • check in with Christine and get syllabus signed off
