  • Learn about satire and common satiric devices
  • Read a little satire to warm up (The Onion, "A Modest Proposal")
  • Watch episodes of The Simpsons and identify satiric devices
  • Analyze use of satire through a well-written, clearly organized essay

  • Students will understand that satire is an expression that uses humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to highlight or expose issues in our society
  • Students will understand that satire effectively gets a message about society across because it cloaks the message in humor that is easily digestible and holds your attention

Wednesday:
  • watch third episode of The Simpsons
    • take notes on satiric devices
    • discuss
  • plan essay responding to the prompt, "How does The Simpsons use satire to comment on society?"
  • get thesis approved, then draft essay
    • self-critique essay with Writing Scoring Guide
    • turn in essay draft
Thursday:
  • revise essay as needed
  • get syllabus signed off
