  • How can we break a text down to analyze it for meaning and tone?
  • How can we determine meaning for unknown words while reading a text?
  • How can music enhance meaning of a text?

goals

  • Students will understand that a text is easier to analyze if you use specific strategies, such as asking questions while you read and looking for particular elements
  • Students will understand that unknown words can often be deciphered by looking at context clues and by breaking words down into prefixes or suffixes
  • Students will understand that understanding tone of a text allows you to make connections between multiple texts or text and various media, such as music

Writing
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience
Language
  • Demonstrate command of conventions of standard English grammar when speaking and writing
  • Demonstrate command of standard capitalization and punctuation
  • Determine meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases 
Reading
  • Read and comprehend complex literature and informational text independently, accurately and for deep understanding 
  • Analyze author’s stylistic choices regarding structure and development of the elements of a story, particularly theme

Monday:
  • famous soundtracks quiz: how does music influence tone?
  • review story elements (plot arc, tone, theme)
  • read and discuss "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" with analysis techniques
    • highlight tone words, ask questions in margins
    • highlight or circle unfamiliar words
  • read "Red-Headed League" independently or with a partner
    • apply same analysis techniques
    • take reading quiz on the story
  • exit slip: plot elements, tone, theme
Tuesday
  • finish "Red-Headed League" and debrief
  • read "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" independently
    • apply same analysis techniques
    • take reading quiz on the story
  • read "The Adventure of the Crooked Man" independently
    • apply same analysis techniques
    • discuss observations
Wednesday
  • start DOK: create a soundtrack for one of the Sherlock stories
    • identify six key moments within the story that highlight plot arc and tone - number them in your draft of the story
    • find one song that matches each moment
    • in a separate document...
      • identify your six moments with a quote from the story
      • identify the song (title and artist, link if possible) you have chosen
      • explain why you chose each particular song for that moment in the story: in what way does it connect to the events of the story, and how does it enhance meaning and tone?
Thursday
  • finish DOK and review with Christine
  • revise as needed
Friday​: wrap-up notes, revise DOK as needed
