how do you broadcast an idea?

In this week's Construct module, we'll make statements about topics important to us. We will do that by researching the topic, gathering relevant facts and sources, and synthesizing it into an eye-catching PowToon. 

Bonus: you'll earn 5 Tech points for this module!

essential questions

  • What is effective marketing?
  • How do we summarize an idea?
  • How do we present information in a logical and clear way, concisely?

goals

  • Students will understand that effective marketing presents and idea by taking into account both the purpose of the prompt and the audience.
  • Students will understand that, to summarize an idea, you need to identify and prioritize the main points within it.
  • Students will understand that presenting an idea concisely and logically requires planning and lots of revision!

activities

This outline follows your syllabus with greater detail in case you need to make up an element on your own.

INTRODUCE
  • Watch a sample PSA (choose one from the list to the right)
    • share out: what is the message? who is the intended audience?
  • Review syllabus and expectations for the week

EXPOSE
  • Read "How to Create the Perfect Public Service Announcement"
    • annotate with two colors or symbols:
      • at least 5 points - what is important to keep in mind?
      • at least 2 points - what is not important to keep in mind?
    • discuss article and your choices for annotations
  • Watch sample PowToon (see top of the page, next to essential question)

PRACTICE
  • Discuss goals of creating a PSA
    • bring awareness to a topic
    • share facts
    • reach an intended audience
  • Choose a topic for your PSA
    • What's an issue you care about - locally, state-wide, nationally, internationally?
    • Check out ted.com, good.is, the Ad Council catalog, or SIRS for ideas (see handbook for SIRS login)
  • Research your topic to learn about its background and key points for the issue
    • Collect notes and sources in Google Docs notes template (save a copy for yourself to edit)
  • Explore Powtoon.com - create an account and watch the tutorial

CREATE
  • Go over rubric for PowToons
    • content
    • audience
    • design
  • Write an outline based on your notes (use the same document as your notes)
  • Build PSA PowToon!

REFLECT​
  • self-evaluate PSA PowToon with rubric
  • submit to Morgan for review
  • revise as needed
