what is poetry, really?

Module summary:
  • Expand your definition of poetry! This week will be a conglomeration of mini-lessons and poetry practice, culminating in a portfolio of your original work. 
  • Poetry we'll explore:
    • Found
    • Slam
    • Randomized
    • Abcedery
    • Structured (sonnets, limericks, haiku)
  • DOK: polished and primed poetry portfolio!

  • What is poetry?
  • How can we express thoughts, observations, and ideas creatively but with intention?​

goals

  • Students will understand that poetry is a form of writing where the form and language is used intentionally to enhance ideas.
  • Students will understand that poetry can take many forms - sometimes with rules, sometimes without - to express ideas with focus and purpose.
​

Writing
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
  • Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach
Language
  • Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meaning 

activities

Monday:
  • Do warm-up: practice literary terms
  • Go over syllabus and expectations
  • Mini-lesson: Found poetry
    • Group practice: lines from the R&W Handbook
  • Write a one found poem from one of these sources:
    • First lines from 8-10 books
    • Lines from a topic in the news (3-5 articles)
Tuesday
  • Western State Poetry Slam field trip!
Wednesday:
  • Wrap up Poetry Slam work
  • Mini-lesson: randomized poetry
    • Group practice: Pledge of Allegiance
  • Write at least one randomized poem - select 1-2 paragraphs from a famous text:
    • Declaration of Independence
    • Pledge of Allegiance
    • "I have a Dream" speech
    • Gettsyburg Address
    • ... or suggest your own (but get it approved first)
Thursday:
  • Focus: Abcedery poetry
    • More details to come :) 
Friday:
  • Experiment with more structured poetry
    • Sonnets, odes, limericks, haiku, etc.
  • Pull together DOK
    • Polish a poem for each day you are in the module and compile them in a collection with an intentional title ["poetry portfolio" doesn't count...]
