This module combines content and direction from Café Cultura and Power Poetry. Expand your definition of poetry through spoken word form and bring yourself into your poems!
Overview of module:
Tuesday: Café Cultura diversity meeting and poetry workshop
Wednesday/Thursday: explore Power Poetry site and write two original poems
Thursday/Friday: get feedback on poems and refine

Students will understand that poetry can take many forms - sometimes with rules, sometimes without - to express ideas with focus and purpose.

Create account at www.powerpoetry.org and familiarize yourself with the website
Practice [Wednesday]
Choose 2 action topics (under "Take Action" tab of powerpoetry.org)
read tips for each topic and write down 3-5 takeaways for each topic
read 2-3 example poems for each topic; for each one, note powerful elements and poetic devices
Create [Wednesday/Thursday]
Write your own poem for each action topic (so you're writing two separate poems)
share poems with at least one other person and get feedback (I like, I wonder…)
Finish or refine poem from Café Cultura workshop - and type it up
Reflect [Friday]
Conference one-on-one about three poems
Revise and re-submit as needed; submit to Power Poetry website if you're comfortable
