HONY and challenging assumptions

what do we gain from looking beneath the surface?

Module summary:
  • Explore the Humans of New York blog
  • Discuss personal narrative essay structure
  • Review "show vs tell" writing approaches
  • Respond to narrative and persuasive quick writes
  • Create either a personal narrative or persuasive essay
    • Personal narrative essay: describe an experience you've had that connects to a HONY photo
    • Persuasive essay: analyze an issue in society brought to light by a HONY photo

Without knowing their stories, what do you assume about these people?

We'll be using this tiny sampling from HONY as a warm-up on Tuesday:

essential questions

  • How does planning out ideas strengthen the final writing product?
  • What is a personal narrative essay?

goals

  • Students will understand that, when you have a clearer sense of where you are headed, you will be more likely to reach your destination.
  • Students will understand that a personal narrative essay is more than a typed journal entry - it is an opportunity to share and reflect upon a focused moment in your life.
