coco and the day of the dead

What constitutes an ideal PowerPoint?

This is a Connect module - which means we'll be focusing on developing targeted skills. Our skill focus points this week are developing informative and persuasive PowerPoints, which we will do by analyzing the film Coco.

Module summary:
  • be exposed: Learn about Día de los Muertos traditions and visuals
  • practice: create and evaluate group PPT; watch and take notes on Coco
  • create: create and present an informative and persuasive PPT
  • reflect: discuss merits of effective PPTs with Morgan

essential questions

  1. What does an effective PowerPoint slide look like?
  2. How do we use PPT slides in a presentation?
  3. How do we synthesize information from a variety of sources?

goals

  1. Students will understand that effective PowerPoint slides blend images and key phrases to enhance a verbal presentation.
  2. Students will understand that a verbal presentation uses PPT slides as a visual outline and notes to add depth to the spoken ideas.
  3. Students will understand that synthesizing information from a variety of sources requires prioritizing information based on the given prompt and looking for meaningful connections.

activities

INTRODUCE
  • Complete warm up: critique sample PowerPoint slides with handout
  • Review syllabus and module expectations

EXPOSE
  • Review effective and ineffective PowerPoint slides, using warm-up slides as samples
  • Split into two groups and research Día de los Muertos
    • Find facts on origins, traditions, and visuals
    • Collect facts into group note catcher
    • Save sources

PRACTICE
  • As a group, create a PowerPoint presentation based on your research findings
    • PPT should include six slides:
      • Title slide (title, image, MLA heading info)
      • Origins slide
      • 3 traditions/visuals slides
      • Sources slide
    • Each slide (except sources slide) must include a topic (title), bullet point text, and 1-3 images
    • Plan who will discuss which slide(s) during your presentation
    • Make sure notes align with slides - your notes should include greater depth than the info on your slides
  • Both groups will present PPTs
    • Self-evaluate your own PPT and presentation and evaluate the other group's presentation using PPT rubric
  • As a class, discuss strengths and weaknesses of each group's presentation and PPT
  • Watch Disney/Pixar's Coco
  • Take notes on how origins, traditions, and visuals are similar to or different from what you've learned
    • Is anything significant missing? were new traditions and/or visuals built into story? have traditions and/or visuals been changed?
    • Use graphic organizer to capture notes

CREATE
  • Create a PowerPoint summarizing and analyzing Coco
    • PowerPoint should include seven slides:
      • Title slide (title, image, MLA info)
      • Thesis slide - respond to question, "Does Coco accurately represent the culture and tradition of Día de los Muertos?"
      • Context slide (think: how can you summarize story without too much text?)
      • 3 traditions/visuals slides
      • Sources slide
  • Use rubric to self-evaluate PowerPoint and revise PPT as needed
  • Present PowerPoint to Morgan

REFLECT
  • Reflect on PowerPoint with Morgan
