how do you summarize a school?

How would you describe CCHS? How would you tell its story and purpose in a minute? That's our goal this week. We'll learn how to make a PowToon (a free platform for creating animated videos), then create one that introduces CCHS.

Module summary:
  • learn the basics of PowToon
  • create a video on anything to test the platform
  • plan a video about CCHS: storyboard and write a script
  • create CCHS introduction PowToon
  • compete to have your PowToon added to our website and social media!
Here's my summary of the module, PowToon-style!

essential questions

  • What is effective marketing?
  • How do we summarize an idea?
  • How do we present information in a logical and clear way, concisely?

goals

  • Students will understand that effective marketing presents and idea by taking into account both the purpose of the prompt and the audience.
  • Students will understand that, to summarize an idea, you need to identify and prioritize the main points within it.
  • Students will understand that presenting an idea concisely and logically requires planning and lots of revision!

activities

Monday
  • watch Christine's PowToon explaining the module
  • learn how to create your own PowToon
  • explore the website
  • build your own 30 second PowToon on any topic - start with a template and change elements and text to fit your topic

Tuesday
  • finish building your own 30 second PowToon
  • watch and evaluate PowToons
  • discuss goals of CCHS PowToon
    • many people in BV don't really know what CCHS is all about; what do you think they should understand?
    • what would be helpful for prospective students and parents to know?
    • this video is an introduction - should work for community members, prospective families, school board members, future staff, other staff in the district, etc.
  • discuss process for making your video:
    • create basic outline
      • what key points do you want to include?
      • how many slides do you need? 
      • what will you say on each slide?
      • which slides will have voiceover?
    • write a script for your slides and voiceover
    • choose a template to start with on PowToon
    • put it all together!
  • go over rubric for videos
    • content: how to earn credits/graduate, culture and atmosphere, staff/students (size of school)
    • elements to consider:
      • font and text
      • music
      • moving images
      • background
      • transitions between slides
      • voiceover (optional)
    • audience: future students, parent, alumni, school board, BV community
  • work independently on your outline/storyboard/script

Wednesday
  • check in with Christine about your outline and script
  • when your plan has been approved, start translating it into PowToon
  • work, design, play with PowToon!

Thursday
  • finish polishing your CCHS PowToon
  • self-evaluate with rubric
  • submit to Christine for review
  • revise as needed

Friday​​
  • present PowToons to each other
  • submit for voting process

  • Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through effective selection, organization, and analysis of content
  • Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products in flexible and dynamic ways (open to feedback, link to other information) 
Speaking and listening
  • Present information, findings and supporting evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective
  • Make strategic use of digital media in oral presentations
